Nogales 81 Project, interview with Nicolas Mujica

The remodeling of this apartment is the result of a synergistic work between L'Atelier Bogotá and ContraFuerte arquitectura, led by architect Nicolás Mujica, whom we interviewed on this occasion. A project that tries to give modern touches to the spaces, maintaining some aesthetic details of traditional interior design that are mixed with the furniture to offer warm and comfortable rooms.
Where did the intention of relying on L'Atelier to do the interior design of this apartment come from?
We had already worked together making the furniture for my apartment. And for some time we had been bidding on projects but they were not carried out. So it was for this apartment that the opportunity arose. Also, I have always liked the work that L'Atelier does, I think they make very polished things and in the end, the wave they have adopted regarding craftsmanship is very valuable. So we managed to work together again.
How to integrate furniture into architectural design?
Our idea is always to blend spaces together, I think that is a bit of what we want to offer the client. For example, in this remodeling we integrated many panels of the same colors and if you look closely, you can't tell that it is a piece of furniture. This is done especially in areas such as the kitchen and storage spaces.
On the other hand, what we wanted then was to mimic the architecture and give it the utility that the client was looking for, since one of her requirements was that since she previously lived in a larger apartment, when moving to a smaller one she needed a lot of storage space.
What kind of materials were used and why?
Since we had to leave the original floor in this apartment, which is like a granadillo that has reddish and yellow hues, what we did, precisely, was contrast that floor with the carpentry and not go with any veneer or wood, but rather use solid colors that in the end are more modern.
What aesthetic concept governs the place?
We didn't base ourselves so much on an aesthetic concept, let's say that what we wanted to do was to adopt the client's furniture, which is a mix of a classic style with certain contemporary touches. So, from that point on, we wanted to keep those styles, appropriate them and adapt them a little more to the design of the place.
What is your favorite spot from this remodel?
The social area because it was the space where we had the most intervention. What we tried to do was to enlarge the kitchen and remove walls so that the apartment would be much larger and integrate all the rooms through the panels that run through the place.
